Nokia 5230: Mediocre Touchscreen Phone

Normal at Best
The new offer from mobile phone manufacturer giant, Nokia is one that is at par with the other touchscreen phones in the market today. Not to say that this is bad but in an industry where phones are constantly differentiating themselves, a normal mobile phone will undoubtedly get lost and forgotten. This might be the fate of the Nokia 5230 but nothing is set in stone. As it stands, this is a normal, mediocre phone; not bad but not that good either and in a highly competitive market, that might just cause a problem.
Its Design
As far a design goes, the Nokia 5230 is basically every other touchscreen phone out there. It’s 111.0 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm frame, and 15 gram weight is not much different from the norm. It doesn’t have an elongated body, or is significantly thin, or anything else.  But that does not mean that it looks bad, it just means it plain looking. Not even the 360 x 640 pixel 3.2 inch resistive touchscreen is anything special.
But it does have one saving grace; the Nokia 5230 has an assortment of colored back covers that should add some level of individuality to this mobile phone. With colors ranging from pink to aqua, Nokia attempted to make this a fun aspect for this phone, and it is. It is just not enough to compensate for the featureless front design.
Its Functions
Nothing really jumps out and catches your attention in terms of the Nokia 5230’s features. It has the basics of a touchscreen mobile phone like an accelerometer, capability to send and receive SMS / MMS, a built-in 2.0 megapixels camera, voice memo capabilities and also voice dialing, as well as other typical features of a mobile phone.
Yes, it does have an application that allows one to play music files without opening any application (play music from the main screen), and it also has video playback capabilities, a viewer of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint documents, even a Photo editor, and an increased accessibility to Facebook and MySpace. Yes, it has all these but really, only the lowest-level touchscreen phone does not have these features. The music playback feature is unique but it won’t be enough to cover up the lackluster functionality of the rest of the phone.
The Nokia 5230 is a simple and plain phone. Nothing stands out, and nothing really grabs your attention. The lack of WiFi only puts an exclamation on the point that there are better, more impressive phones out there.
