Windows line of operating systems offer Disk Defragmenter utility. This tool is usable to overcome hard disk fragmentation issues. Excessive fragmentation can corrupt file system, hence Hard Disk Recovery experts always suggest performing regular defragmentation of the hard disk. But sometimes, this tool can cause issues while performing hard disk defragmentation.
In some cases, when user tries to defragment hard disk using Windows Disk Defragmenter utility, an error is encountered:
“Error Defragmenting Drive <drive>. Windows could not access part of the drive.”
This error message is further followed by ID No DEFRAG005 or DEFRAG006. Error ID DEFRAG005 signifies that Disk Defragmenter is facing issues while writing to a hard disk sector, while error ID DEFRAG006 indicates issues while reading data from hard disk sectors.
Cause
Disk Defragmenter fails to read or write data from few sectors of hard disk. It is because these sectors have gone bad and unreadable by systm due to parity loss or index corruption. Disk tools such as Chkdsk mark unreadable sectors as bad and not usable to store information. However, if it fails to identify or user doesn’t use disk tool, unusable sectors may not be marked as bad. So Disk Defragmenter may try to access such sectors.
Solution
• Users are required to backup hard disk information and check backup status thereafter. Incomplete or faulty backup state may create hard drive recovery needs.
• To remove logical bad sectors, users can reformat the hard disk.
• After formatting, deleted data can be restored from backup. Disk formatting and data restoration also serves the purpose of defragmentation.
